Ordered a roast beef stuffed so papilla and green chile cheese burger...nothing to write home about. The stuffed so papilla didn't come with any sides and was just meh...burger had a strange taste to it. Also ordered chicken quesadilla as an app and it came with our food and was just 2 small quesadilla triangles. Wouldn't recommend.

By far the best authentic New Mexican food in Santa Fe, if not all of New Mexico. The owner has a long standing connection to the Santa Fe Farmers Market so they source as many ingredients as possible from local farmers. It's located in De Vargas mall but don't let the humble strip mall exterior fool you. This place is top notch! At any given moment you'll find the local to tourist ratio at about 10:1 in favor of the locals. This is a very good sign. Enjoy the true taste of Santa Fe!

Heard a rumor that they had a good green chili cheeseburger - it's Fantastic!!! Yumtastic! Fav in Santa Fe tastic! And their green chili beef stew is even better!!! Yum Yum!

Imagine if Tomasita's and Horseman's Haven had a baby. You'd have the quintessential Santa Fe recipes but without the 45 minute wait and hotter chile. Well Atrisco is the joining of two chile dynasties set in an assuming mall with ample parking. Whenever we visit my family in Santa Fe try to figure out where to go, this always winds up being the choice by process of elimination. It just pleases everyone.

Terrific New Mexican food, unpretentious and just plain good eatin. The chicken burrito smothered in green is superb. I kind of hate to write this review, sort of like letting slip the location of a secret fishing hole, but they've earned it.

Love Atrisco for low-key New Mexican food. This is one of those "local" places that people flock to all hours of the day to get their NexMex fix. My personal favorite is their stuffed beef sopaipilla smothered in green chile. Their southwest chicken salad doesn't disappoint either, if that's your thing. They have a full bar and lots of beers on tap, which is awesome! The parking lot at DeVargas Mall is a mess, though, since drivers can't seem to follow directional arrows...

While I miss the old Diegos, Atrisco was able to fill some hearty shoes. Great chile rellanos and huevos rancheros. They changed up the dining room a bit and the restaurant has a much better feel and openness to it. It was such a relief to try out Atrisco and walk out with a smile on my face. Great prices, great food! Also great to get away from the tourists asking for a side of "sal-sa" or what other colors besides red and green the chile comes in.

The downtown area was packed so I decided to go here with my parents last weekend. This is a small restaurant inside the Devargas Mall (assuming its still called that, it was when i lived here). We just happened to get possibly the worst seat in the house which was right next to the bussers station. We kept hearing plates and glasses slamming throughout our meal. If I weren't so hungry I would probably ask if we could move. I know when you have a restaurant you must make-do with what you have, but maybe they should consider moving the bussers station further away from the tables so customers don't have to dine while listening to plates slamming with glasses and silverware. I honestly can't remember the service, so it must have been about average. Neither good nor bad. I ordered a combo plate and the food was on par for what I was expecting.

Atrisco's has the best down-home New Mexican food in Santa Fe. I always get the "light" plate, which is the same size as a regular plate, but I can eat everything without feeling guilty. I did try the meatloaf once, and it was good. My husband could eat here every day.

Meh. We came here after trying to go to Tomasita's on a Sunday, only to find a sign on their door referring us to their "sister" restaurant Atriscos. Tomasita's should be careful who they endorse. The service here was awful. The hostess was beyond aggravated that we had five in our party. So many comments about how our 5th person at the end of the table was in the way if the waitstaff. UMMMMMM.....you seated us here lady. You knew there were five of us.....not our problem. Our server acted completely put out with our menu questions and a request for a children's menu. Food? Marginal. Being raised in NM and visiting Santa Fe regularly, there are just so many better places to go. The sopapillas made from some sort of wheat or grain flour weren't my thing. I'll take the traditional kind, thanks. Relleno and enchilada were average. And the taco? If rather hit the drive thru at Taco Bell. Next time we come to NM, I'll make sure our Santa Fe day trip is on Sunday so we can go to Tomasitas. Won't be back to Atriscos.

The business is turning itself around, and the results are appealing. There is apparently a new manager. The staff is now hard working and focused. The waiter still called us "guys," but that is so common now that it is hard to avoid. The food is some of the best New Mexican food I ever tasted, and I'm third generation. Let's see if they can sustain it. I ordered the carne adovada sopapilla, and it was good.

This is one of our favorite spots for red chile in Santa Fe, whether it's on an enchilada or a in a bowl, it's always flavorful and a bit spicy. The service is always great with a pleasant atmosphere.

Summary: 3.5 stars. Get a booth, skip the green chile, get the red! Good food, good service. Came here today for a late lunch with my girlfriend. We were seated immediately at a table, and damn are those wooden chairs uncomfortable. You'd think they'd spring for some seat covers. So get a booth if you can. After looking over the menu, we decided to both order Atriscombo's, which come with a blue corn chicken enchilada, chile relleno, a taco, beans and posole. I chose Christmas, and I regretted that decision immediately after seeing their green chile. It was LIME GREEN, and looked like it was just thawed off a block of Bueno brand chile. There wasn't any flavor to it either. Very disappointing. The red, however, was amazing. Obviously homemade with a nice smokey flavor and heat level. I'm partial to very spicy food, and would have liked more heat, but I understand that not everyone can handle that much spice. Either way, I was pleased with my meal after asking for another side of red. It's kind of weird that they just put the posole on the plate with the rest of the food, and not in a little ramekin on the side, but all-in-all, I was happy with the food and would come back, but will definitely get RED ONLY.

Called them 4 times from ABQ airport to see if we could eat there as late as 9:15 Over a space of 45 minutes they never answered their phone. Unacceptable!

This is one of those random spots that a couple long time locals told me to go get some of SF's best green chili. It's a simple diner in a strip mall with nothing special in the way of atmosphere and vibe, but the green chili stew and eggs were definitely good. The beef in the stew was tender and the green chiles had the perfect little kick for breakfast. My little green chili R&D hunt is turning out to be a great success.

I usually find myself stopping here when I need a quick afternoon bowl of green chile stew and a beer. Service isn't always the greatest or friendliest, but the food is good. I especially like that I can get a tap beer. I think the food is down home, wholesome. This place seems to be more about defining regular, at-home, kitchen cooking, than aspiring to be tourist taste New Mexican. I'm giving five stars for local food and good, filling cold-day satisfying food. If I were to rate service, Atrisco's would get 2.5 stars. If you are a visitor to this city, come here for lunch. Don't blow your touring $$$budget here for dinner. You can walk here from the Plaza.

Authentic, fast, and friendly. The red chile is spectacular, and when you throw it on a sopapilla.....magic. The carne adobada is stellar too.

I ordered Carne Adovada in house special. It is really good. I loved sopapilla. I ate 2 of them without any honey.

Excellent staff and amazing food. We rolled in right before closing time and still managed to get incredible service. After a few days of backpacking in the Pecos Wilderness, this food hit the spot.

Continuing to try new places while in Santa Fe, we hit on Atrisco Café although Bro J and TT thought they had been there once before. I was a little concerned about their loose affiliation through family, with Tomasita's which all of us had found very touristy and over rated on past visits. I decided to take a break from classic New Mex and ordered their meat loaf. This was decent, without much New Mex influence and could be found in about any diner. The meat loaf is pretty solid, which I normally like. It did not think it had great flavor from the meat of herbs or other seasonings. It was over loaded with onion and that is really all you can taste. It was served with mashed potatoes that included fresh jalapenos which is an idea to take home. It was also served with crisp tender sautéed vegetables. The potatoes and meat loaf was covered with plenty of commercial brown gravy. I asked for a side of green chile to liven the plate up (so some New Mex after all). The green chile was plain, roasted, chopped green chile. This would have been a good plate if they worked on the meat loaf seasoning a little and saved themselves some money on onions. Bro J ordered a great looking bowl of Green Chile Stew. It was brothy with large chunks of potato (read half a potato) with what J claimed was beef and a little tomato cooked into the broth. My taste showed well developed, balanced flavors. The green chile was not cooked into it, but was dumped over the top. J added a little salt. I would order this again. Ms T ordered a plate of small hard shell ground beef tacos, pretty overpriced and not seasoned well. TT had a "lighter appetite" platter which looked like a lot of food to me. It had posole, beans and a chile relleno. Again, the beans were underdone. That seems to be a theme in Santa Fe. The posole here was unlike any other we had. It is plain white hominy with no green or red chile. It had a little bit of chicken. The corn flavor was good, but it was pasty. It is fine as a side, but it is not what you would want a big bowl of. Atrisco is trying to be a little more yuppie than I need. It was OK, but I would head back to Adelita's, Tecolote, Los Amigos, The Pantry or El Comal or ......... before coming back here. If I were to return, it would be for Bro J's Green Chile Stew.

This may have become one of my favorite Santa Fe restaurants. It's New Mexican food, with amazing chile and sopapillas. I had veggie enchiladas smothered in Christmas-style chile. The red was hotter than the green, but neither was too hot to eat and both were very flavorful. The server was friendly and helpful. It's not a fancy place, but clean and comfortable, not too loud despite being packed. The wait was over an hour, so plan accordingly. Definitely worth it.

Very yummy. Went here on recommendation of a friend. It was Sunday night and had a slight wait. But fortunately had nice Santa Fe locals to talk to. I had an awesome mango margarita & sopapilla with roast beef & green chile my husband had the Alvarado with red chiles. We were pleased with the service and the food. The only reason I gave it a 4 was we had to wait in the beginning. But worth the wait!

If you are looking for good native cuisine, this is well worth it. I've never eaten their non New Mexican food, so I can't comment on that. Many ingredients are locally sourced. The lamb is excellent. The green chile is usually hot- as it should be! Potions are generous. The chile con queso is one of the best I've ever had. Real cheese. They will gracefully accommodate any changes you may need to make due to dietary considerations. The service is great- friendly and attentive without being overbearing. They genuinely care that you are there. The kitchen staff laughs a lot. That means something- all that humor and fun going into a plate of food! Joel is the manager and he truly inspires his staff. We love coming here and have eaten here regularly for several years My only complaint is that the burrito plates have only the smothered burrito- no sides (i.e beans, rice). This makes for a pricey burrito plate.

Atrisco Cafe has the best, IMO, red chile in Santa Fe. Using local ingredients when possible, this restaurant is one of this foodie's favorite for New Mexican dining. Brunch on the weekends is a treat.

  • Sheena S.

Hotel SF recommended this restaurant. It had bland guacamole the tacos were delicious the chilies were spicy. The enchiladas would have been better with shredded beef, not used to ground beef enchiladas it just seems lazy. Chicken burrito was also good.

This place had a special I loved "lamb ribs". Never hAve I had such a wonderful meal. The service was super and very accommodating, colleagues had the "atria I combo and were ver happy! We did hit happy hour and the margaritas hit the spot!

I was set on the lamb burrito but agonized over my decision when I saw they also had a lamb ribs special. My food algorithm struggled a bit but I liked the fact that they only had one special - it had to be good, right? My dining companion, who is of the vegetarian-American persuasion, opted for huevos rancheros. The ribs were the right choice, providing more of a pure meat feeling than a burrito would have. It may have had a bit of pepper but mostly the meat spoke for itself. The red chili accompaniment had a great kick. On the downside, the cole slaw and mashed potatoes and gravy were closer to KFC-caliber. The tropical iced tea was a little weak in the first go-round but improved with refills. I had to take some of the huevos rancheros (for journalistic purposes) and was impressed. It was accompanied by serious green chile (red or green are options.) Although I had just one sip of the prickly pear margarita, my dining companion spoke highly of both the taste and strength (and the vivid pink color, which probably would be better conveyed in pictures than words, but I'm low-tech.)

I enjoyed the restaurant and the meal (lamb burrito) despite the bad reviews I came here cause a family friend recommended it. I went on a weekday around 4pm a down time maybe that's why I got lucky with good service. The food was good also had a Margareta which I enjoyed.

I ordered a salad that was supposed to have meat and cheese on it. It came and was a pile of light colored romaine with half a piece of cheap lunch american, cheddar and salami sliced in a few strips. It was so stingy and meager. The salad had less then a 50¢ worth of bad lunch meat and half a tomato and it cost $10.50!!! It looked like the Mexican was a better bet here (and the service was really kindly) but I cannot recommend a place that charges that much for a quarter head of romaine.

  • J H.

Wow. Ummm I don't know where to really begin. I don't quite understand how they have so many customers. I failed to read reviews before I went and ordered nachos and was extremely disappointed. Store bought chips and canned artificial cheese with old unflavored chicken chunks. Tamale was supposed to be pork and I swear it was beef and from Costco's frozen aisle. When I asked, the waiter said it was bought from somewhere else. I guess I'm not sure what actually is made in the kitchen. The jalapeño poppers were red and not full peppers but a slice of red pepper within some cheese and fried. Not sure if the lamb burrito on the table was really lamb but it wasn't mine and I was not willing to try it. There are probably things that aren't smart choices off their menu and unfortunately we ordered all of them.

If you could take Atriscos' flavor of their chiles combined w/ Bobcat's meat, you'd have one helluva a bitchin' camaro burger. Fries were great! Burger was good but way too messy and too thin of a patty for me. I finished in no time b/c once you pick it up the patty crumbles apart. You don't dare put it down for fear of not being able to pick it up again.

HORRIBLE breakfasts! They have these special weekend breakfasts, and they need to do away with this immediately! It's never made to order, sometimes it smells, and the staff never seems to care about any of it! I strongly recommend taking your business elsewhere.

My husband went to this restaurant over 6 years ago and REMEMBERED THIS PLACE being amazing. He couldn't remember the exact name but could remember enough about the food, location (in a mall), and restaurant decor that we were able to find it online. We went (twice actually) and had a great experience both times. The sopapillas are huge and complimentary when you order an entree - but make sure to ask them to hold them until the end of your meal so that they'll come out hot; otherwise, they'll bring them out with your food! Overall, a great experience. We'd definitely go back!!

We spent a week in Santa Fe and tried several of the New Mexican restaurants. This one was recommended to us by a chef at the Santa Fe School of Cooking and it was the BEST of the entire week. The green sauce was perfect. You could actually taste the food without everything being smothered in sauce. And the whole wheat sopapillas were GREAT. Too bad it was our last day in town or we would have went back. Don't be fooled by it being in a strip mall, it is by far the best in town.

If you like the Team concept of being waiting on, you might like this place. Our experience was to be seated by one person, our drink order taken by another, our order taken by yet another. food brought out still another and finally a check presented by someone else. My issue is who is waiting on me? Our order for lamb burrito and chicken tacos with posole , water and ice tea.The food was brought out by another person who didn't take my order so he didn't know that I was to have posole not rice. Lamb burrito was slice meat... maybe lamb...maybe not? Certainly not worth the extra expense. Chicken tacos were run of the mill, no seasoning on chicken, ice berg lettuce, tomatoes and sauce on the side. When we left the cashier asked if everything was OK? I responded with the above complaint. The cashier and a gentleman I must assume is the manager listen to my complain and dismissed my wife and I.

Usually I don't like to write bad reviews, but this time I feel I have to. We came here on a Wednesday evening. The place was crowded and a person, whom I assume is the manager, put us down on a waiting list. So far so good. He told us the waiting time would be 20-25 minutes so we thought we would take a walk through the mall the restaurant is connected to. We came back after about 10 minutes whereas the manager told us, in a tone that makes me question whether it was a joke or not, that we could not leave but had to stay in the restaurant and wait even though it was crowded beyond capacity. Suddenly, the manager walks away and a waiter takes over the "list." He calls out our name and seats us at a table. At this point the manager rushes back and tells him there is another person in front of us. The waiter then tells us to leave the table where we already have been seated and wait yet another couple of minutes. When the waiter finally seats us waiter number two comes to take our drink and appetizer order. We ordered chips and guacamole. She later comes back with the drinks and takes our main course order. When she had taken our order she just stretched out her hand, meaning that we were supposed to pick up the menus, which were laying right in front of her, and place them in her hand. Very unprofessional! When we receive our chips and guacamole, which was almost $7, we discover that the chips are paper thin and the seemingly full bowl of guacamole had a fake bottom which they filled with lettuce. In other words, we surely felt cheated on our guacamole as it barely was enough for half the amount of our paper chips. Our main order, cheese enchiladas and a lamb burrito, was disappointing at best. The lamb, which they take pride in being "grown" locally, is mutilated by the way it is processed and later drenched in the green chili. The enchiladas, well, they were enchiladas, but not worth the price. When done with this less than satisfactory meal our bill arrived, $41. Apparently, they haven't entrusted the waiters with handling money or credit cards but you are supposed to take your bill up front to the manager (?) who seems to run the place like a mafia boss. He will then take care of your bill at the same time as he is struggling with seating people coming in. Confusing to say the least as he is switching roles back and forth one minute to another. The final problem is, who do I give my money to when I tip? At this point, three people had been taken care of us. Two of which are rude, and one who's just clumsy. If you want a Mexican meal then I recommend Red Enchilada on St. Michael's Drive and Cerillos, their food quality surpasses Atrisco with a mile but aren't pretentious about it (which brings down the prices). Save yourself the trip and skip Atrisco! EDIT 3/11/13: PS. We both got food poisoning. The night was NOT fun!

We went with P's parents and had an enjoyable meal with standard NM'can fare: the burritos, enchiladas, or blue corn tacos, with pinto beans, lettuce, and spanish rice. It is very normal NM'can food with good, but nothing special, service. I might rate it more highly, but both P and I felt sick after our meal and there are just so many GREAT places in Santa Fe that this doesn't really deserve a second try. I don't think P's parents felt sick afterwards but I'm not sure. If there was something more distinctive about this place, it might be good. As it stands, it is neutral territory.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
